Research Day 2013
The 6th annual Research Day was held at the UAF campus on Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
Research Day is sponsored by the Vice Chancellor for Research, the office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarly Activity, and the Honors Program.
Labs and studios were open all around campus from 10 am to 2 pm. Four local high schools toured campus and learned about mass spectrometry, umanned aerial vehicles, zooplankton, botany, mammals, insects, birds, earth science, art, music, and robotics.
Over 60 undergraduate students presented posters in the Wood Center all day. Undergraduate research activities at UAF cover a broad spectrum of disciplines, from climate science to life science, engineering to anthropology, and music to theater. Dean's Choice awards of $100 were awarded to: Kyla Hovda, Christy Howard, Logan Graves, Terilyn Lawson, Michael Keller, Shane Poindexter, Rachelle Ruffner, and Ashley Strauch.
Ten undergraduate students presented their work in the Symposium in the afternoon. Congratulations to Jonathan Nations, Bryant Hopkins and Kyla Hovda who took first, second and third places at the Symposium.
To culminate the day, Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins proclaimed the last Tuesday of April as Fairbanks Research Day; Mayor Hopkins and UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers signed the proclamation. Dr. John Walsh was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and delivered a keynote address, "Environmental Research: Connecting science and stakeholders."
