Tell us a bit about yourself:

My name is Heather Hopson. I was born and raised in Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost incorporated city in the United States. This is my third year at UAF, and I’m majoring in Rural Development.

Why did you choose to attend UAF?

Initially, I chose UAF because it was close to home. When I came to tour campus, I ended up really liking the layout and things it has to offer.

What do you like best about UAF?

My favorite thing about UAF is the diversity – people, cultures, classes, clubs and organizations. There is so much to do and things to be a part of!

What do you like to do in your spare time? What extracurricular activities are you a part of?

Spending time with friends and family, campus activities, shopping, catching up on sleep. I’m a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. I also try to stay involved with other campus clubs.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a prospective student interested in UAF?

Be engaged in activities. Get involved with things that you’re interested in because it can lead to so many opportunities!

What "field work" have you done at UAF that will help you find work in your major?

I haven’t done any field work with UAF, but for the past two summers I have been interning at Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation where I have done tasks and projects related to my field of study.

What do you hope to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I plan to return to Barrow to live and work within the community.

If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?

I love living in my hometown!! But, I do love traveling and enjoy doing that as much as I can.
