Juror’s Statement

The invitation to be juror for this year’s undergraduate group show was a great opportunity and I was thrilled to accept. I was incredibly pleased with the breadth of materials, styles, imagery, methods and ideas.   In choosing works for this show, I set aside more ruthless methods of culling per standard gallery exhibits, and instead adopted an egalitarian inclusiveness. After all, this is all undergraduate classes; all skill levels and all ages.

I chose works that showed effort, interest in materials, and those that piqued my curiosity---works that intrigued the viewer.   I also would like to add that I included work that I didn’t necessarily like---but kept coming back to. These works drew me in to examine them again and again, proving that there was something going on in them worthy of further investigation. This is the indefinable lure of a work of art---the ability for an object to hold attention regardless of style, materials, or appeal.

Overall, I found the work from this group of students to be full of energy and good ideas. I hope you all continue to make good work!
