United Way campaign

Chancellor ThomasOver the years, UAF employees and students have generously contributed time, talent and dollars to the United Way of the Tanana Valley to support organizations that provide important services in the Fairbanks area. One-third of Fairbanks community residents will need help from a United Way member agency in their lifetime. By supporting the United Way of the Tanana Valley, we can make sure help is there when it is needed.

The Community Care Fund is distributed among 21 United Way agencies. These organizations focus on education, income, health, and crisis intervention. The Substance Abuse Initiative supports projects and programs that offer preventive solutions to drug and alcohol abuse in our community. The UWTV motto is “Advancing the Common Good by Focusing on the Building Blocks for a Good Life.”

Kay and I support the United Way and their mission in our community. UAF’s United Way campaign shows Fairbanks that we are a part of this community: we give back, we inspire, and we are engaged. I encourage every employee to give as generously as you can. You can direct your contribution to the Community Care Fund, the Substance Abuse Initiative, or to any 501(c)(3) organization of your choice, which includes UAF through the UA Foundation. You decide where your contribution should go, and you can use payroll deduction to make it simple. Human Resources will be distributing the forms to all departments in the next two weeks.

Brad Lobland, Doug Schrage, Teresa Thompson, Kara Carlson and Amy Hartley are co-chairs of UAF’s United Way fundraising efforts this year. They will be reaching out to your department to set up an agency presentation for your unit, or you can make arrangements with the HR office at 474-7700.

Thank you for all you do for UAF and for the Fairbanks community. United, we can make a difference!

Dana L. Thomas, PhD
Interim Chancellor

Here are ways the UAF community has contributed in 2016:

Chili cook-off
On Nov. 3, the annual United Way Chili Cook-off took place in Wood Center. The event raised nearly $500 and the Nanook Diversity and Action Center’s White Chicken Chili won first place. The event featured chilies made by various UAF departments, as well as student and community organizations. All proceeds were directed to the United Way.

Diwali celebration
Namaste India, a student organization at UAF, donated proceeds from its Nov. 5 Diwali celebration to the United Way.
