Misti Hopkins

Gaalee'ya STEM Coordinator

I currently work as the Gaalee'ya STEM Coordinator where I connect with our students and plan activities and events. I came to this position after 4 years of working with the I-AC Trailmarkers Upward Bound program as their Academic Coordinator and Program Manager.

Previously I taught elementary school in both Fairbanks and the central Asian country of Kazakstan. I received my bachelors degree in Business Management with minors in Sociology and English from
Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

I grew up in Fayetteville, NC and my dad has been working at the army base Ft. Bragg for almost 40 years. Previous to arriving in Alaska, I worked as the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Prevention Director for my county's 24 hour program/shelter. We worked as a family at Joel's Place Youth Center here in Fairbanks also for several years. We love to help others and have taken many mission trips all around the world.

I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Bingle Camp out at Harding Lake and volunteer extensively with our children's programs at Door of Hope. My family is from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia but we have lived in Alaska for 7 years now. I have a 10 year old daughter and a 1 year old son and my husband is a pastor at Door of Hope Church.

I love finding ways to motivate high school and college students to succeed through their education and into a life's work that fits them perfectly. Education is the only proven means out of the cycle of poverty and I have seen that miracle firsthand in my own Appalachian family. I believe everyone deserves equal access to higher education!
