Faculty

Merging Field Experience with the Classroom

HSEM instructors are experts in their field and bring real-world experience to the classroom. The faculty understand the competing demands of military, veteran, and first responder students because they have been there themselves. Instructors work with your schedule while still holding you to a high standard.

Program Director Cameron Carlson

Cameron Carlson started his career in the U.S. Army, enlisting as a Combat Medic and serving as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). He later graduated from Monmouth University as a Distinguished Military Graduate and received his commission as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army. Cam deployed extensively during his career throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Haiti and the Central Asian States, commanding at both company and field grade levels.

Since his retirement from active duty in 2006, Cam has worked at the Battle Command Training Center in Fort Wainwright, Alaska and for a company which provides High Threat Protection services in Iraq and the Middle East.

Adjunct Nick Catrantzos

Nick Catrantzos has security and emergency management experience in both private and public sectors. Nick is a certified protection professional, a certified incident commander, and a licensed private investigator. Prior to his consulting work, he consolidated the security and emergency functions for the world's largest public water utility and served as a case officer for the CIA.

Adjunct Christopher Elg

Christopher Elg is the Chief of Police for Tequesta, Florida. He was a New York State Trooper for 10 years and has been a police chief for the past 18 years. He has also served for 24 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve currently assigned as a Special Agent with the Coast Guard Investigative Service in Miami.

Adjunct David Kang

David Kang has worked for the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. He is a traditional Guardsman and is part of the Alaska National Guard, having deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and numerous other O-CONUS missions. David  is currently working in the area of response planning for the FEMA Response Directorate.

Instructor & Outreach Coordinator Hans Odegard

Hans Odegard has worked on various projects and grants for the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security, the Fairbanks North Star, Borough, and the City of Fairbanks while teaching Emergency Management courses within the UAF School of Management.

Adjunct Ashleigh Sanders

Ashleigh Sanders works for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a Senior Program Analyst. She has also worked in the private sector conducting risk and intelligence analysis at local and national levels.
