UAF Legacy Lecture

Each year, on the first Monday in June, Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning hosts a UAF Alumnus to share his or her life experiences after graduation from UAF.

This year, Vera Alexander will be joining us on Monday June 3rd, 2013.

Dr. Vera Alexander is dean and professor emerita at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She is the first woman to recieve a PhD at the University of Alaska, and a distinquished expert in the field of biological oceanography. She is nationally and internationally recognized for her service in the field of marine science. She has fulfilled many role in her tenure at UAF and was the first dean of UAF's School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, serving over 20 years in this capacity until her retirement in 2004. Vera served as the president of the board of directors for the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS) was a member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee for the Census of Marine Life for 12 years and a US Delegate to the North Pacific Research Organization (PICES) for 15 years. Vera also served on the Marine Mammal Commission for 16 years, 4 of those years as chair. She presently serves on the Science Panel for the North Pacific Research Board.
