Summer Specific Financial Aid

Sweet Summer Deal

What is the Sweet Summer Deal?
The Sweet Summer Deal (SSD) is financial aid offered through Summer Sessions & Lifelong Learning (SSLL). SSD offers summer students the opportunity to enroll in up to 14 undergraduate credits and only pay tuition for the first 10 credits. So, if you register for 14 SSLL credits at UAF this summer, apply for the Sweet Summer Deal and you successfully complete the courses approved for the SSD, you will pay tuition for only ten credits and SSD will pay the tuition for the other four credits.

Who is eligible for the Sweet Summer Deal?
Any student with a minimum 2.0 GPA (cumulative and current semester) who is registered for more than ten SSLL undergraduate credits during Summer 2017 can apply for the Sweet Summer Deal. SSD does NOT require that you be a degree-seeking student at UAF or have evidence of financial need. Students receiving other tuition support such as VA Benefits, UA Employee Tuition Waiver, or UA Scholars are not eligible for the Sweet Summer Deal.

What courses are eligible for the Sweet Summer Deal?
Only courses offered through Summer Sessions are eligible for the Sweet Summer Deal. Courses offered by Summer Sessions can be identified by a section number starting with 'F' and followed by numbers. Courses offered by CTC and eLearning are not eligible. CTC courses can be identified by a section number starting with 'T" and eLearning courses can be identified by a section number starting with 'U'.

Sounds great. How does this work?
First, register for approved SSLL courses. UA students complete the online SSD application; others download and complete a paper SSD application. Application period opens March 1 and closes May 16. When notified of acceptance, pay all fees and only the tuition for the first ten credits by May 31. Now comes the hard work. You must complete your SSD courses with a minimum of a C grade (2.0) in each course by August 11. At that point, the pending SSD funds will be applied to your student account and you have just saved a chunk of money.

What happens if I don't finish with a grade of 'C' (2.0) or better by August 11?
Instead of SSD paying the balance of the summer tuition that is pending on your account, you will have to pay that amount by August 24, 2017, if you do not successfully complete your courses according to the agreement on the SSD application. Or, if you withdraw from your classes, the balance must be repaid within five days of the withdrawal date.

When and how do I apply? Is there a deadline?
You can apply as soon as you have registered for your SSLL Courses. Applications must be received by May 13, 2017. When your application is reviewed you will receive an email indicating whether or not you have been approved for the Sweet Summer Deal.

SSLL also offers a tuition award for three credits. Can I take advantage of the Sweet Summer Deal and the SSLL Tuition Award program?
No, unfortunately you cannot apply for both programs. The SSLL tuition award program is offered to continuing UAF undergraduate students who have maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need per FAFSA. The Sweet Summer Deal is not restricted to UAF students nor is there any requirement of financial need.
