Alternative spring break

Alternative Break 2012- Fact Sheet!

Who: á 10 students, 2 team leaders and one staff advisor from UAF

áá Team leaders: Kelley Ryan and Haley Hanson

áá Staff: Cara Hollingsworth

What: áTo work with the local community of Destin, Florida to build an understanding of coastal ecosystems and watersheds and how they are affected by man-made and natural disasters. The shoreline restoration project will help restore fish habitats. Other community-based projects will be designed to serve families and individuals impacted by the oil spill.

When: á UAF Spring Break, March 11-17, 2012

á

Where: Destin, Florida

á

Why: á The 2010 BP Oil Spill caused extensive damage to the Gulf Coast. We will help to restore marine habitats for fish populations that are essential to the economic stability of the region.

After each day of service, volunteers will participate in a reflection activity that will allow them to share their impressions of the day and any unique experiences, feelings, or facts. á In addition, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with other students on how to make an impact in their home communities using the knowledge and resources they have gained through their service.

Throughout the week students will also have the opportunity to interact with local community members and leaders.

Financial Contribution: Each student will be asked to contribute $600 to the cost of the program in addition to participating in fundraising projects with the team.
