Conference Theme

For this year's conference, we are focusing on stories, including creation stories, traditional stories, and historical stories. Stories capture unique cultural practices, beliefs and linguistic information. Access to stories is changing as communities create language materials and curriculum in a variety of mediums and historical, ethnographic, and linguistic work continues to be digitized. Presentations could address topics including but NOT limited to linguistic description, stories used in language curriculum and teaching, and data management and access to historic records.

Projected Schedule

  • Day 1 - Theoretical & Descriptive Linguistic Presentations
  • Day 2 - Language Maintenance and Revitalization Presentations
  • Day 3- Workshops on Pacific Coast Dene (Athabaskan) Languages

Day 3's topics will be determinehd by participants in the workshop. Please contact Pyuwa Bommelyn for more information Day 3.

About the Conference Name

At the 2012 conference in Bellingham it was suggested that the conference name be changed from Athabaskan to Dene, reflecting a preference for the latter term by many conference participants. It is well-known that the name Athabaskan is not an indigenous term (see this site). For the sake of continuity we will continue to list the former name in parentheses during this time of transition.

Proceedings Volume

Proceedings of the 2013 conference will be published as volume 12 in the ANLC Working Papers series.

Any paper presented at the 2013 conference, or a new paper dealing with ;any aspect of Dene (a.k.a. Athabascan, Athabaskan) linguistics or anthropology, is welcome. Keep in mind that these are working papers. They will be checked for appropriateness of content and conformity to the style guide (below), but authors themselves are largely responsible for their content. ;It seems quite likely that from this year on the volume will be distributed digitally as well as in print. UAF’s new Institutional Repository will most likely host the series, and starting with this publishing cycle, papers archived there will have a unique identifier, making them accessible to authors for preservation and circulation. More information about this method of dissemination will be made available later.

Deadline for submission is TBA.
