Arctic Futures 2050 Conference

CAPS Director Amy Lauren Lovecraft and Research Associate Dustin Elsberry will be representing the Center for Arctic Policy Studies at the upcoming Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) Arctic Futures 2050 Conference in Washington, DC, from September 4 to 6. A series of posters illustrating the outcomes of the 2018 Arctic Futures Scenario Workshop, and prepared by CAPS Program Coordinator Kelsey Aho, will be presented at the conference.

The future of the Arctic is one of CAPS’ central focus areas and has been a longstanding emphasis within Dr. Lovecraft’s work. As part of the SEARCH Arctic Futures 2050 endeavor, Lovecraft co-led the Arctic Futures Scenario Workshop in Seattle in April 2018. Prior to that, she co-edited the transdisciplinary volume North by 2020: Perspectives on Alaska’s Changing Social-Ecological Systems (University of Chicago Press, 2011) and served as Principle Investigator on the NSF-funded Northern Alaska Scenarios Project (NASP), which focused on how to achieve healthy sustainable Arctic Alaskan communities by the year 2040.

In addition to her work with SEARCH on the Arctic Futures 2050 program, Dr. Lovecraft also sits on the SEARCH Science Steering Committee. A number of CAPS Affiliates also contribute to SEARCH, including Dr. Brendan Kelly, who serves as SEARCH Executive Director.
