ADSO
Arctic Defense and Security Orientation (ADSO)
ADSO was conceived in 2013 as an educational program for the Department of Defense
designed to develop and deliver the baseline information concerning the Arctic region
for defense authorities and associates. Normally, DOD maintains such knowledge requirements
through a variety of internal regional programs meant to ensure that service members
and civilians had access to the best information for their respective strategic and
operating environments. However, for the Arctic, the Department of Defense decided
that the best approach to success would be to partner with the lead institute in the
nation with regard to the Arctic sciences, both natural and social. As a result, CASR
began development in 2013 and deliveries in 2014-2021.
Since then, the program has developed and maintained over twelve modules that provide
a comprehensive and authoritative introductory overview of the entire Circumpolar
North. Furthermore, the program maintains and develops two curicula, including a regular
as well as executive version. The regular version of the program occurs over three
days, with CASR delivering days one and two while the commands conduct day three -
also known as government day.
