I was born in California, raised in Switzerland, and went to university in Canada and the UK. I have always had a fascination with the ocean and the phytoplankton that live there. I want to help understand how climate change is both affecting and being affected by phytoplankton.

Career Goals

Professor at a research institute.

  • Phytoplankton
  • Growth
  • Optics
  • Climate change
  • Remote sensing
  • Carbon budgets

Research Overview

I am working with the LTER program investigating the use of optical measurements to determine the growth rates of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Alaska. These rates are taken at a much finer scale than normal growth measurements as they do not require a 24 hour incubation or the use of stable isotopes. I hope to use this to shed light on how the GOA is changing due to anthropogenic forcings such as river input and CO2.

Current research projects

  • LTER reseach with Will Burt.
