How to Apply

The application deadline for Fall admission into our program January 15 for domestic and international students.  The application deadline for Spring admission is October 1 for domestic students (we do not accept international students for spring admission).

Application Requirements

The Office of Admissions must receive the following before reviewing an application:

  • Graduate Application for Admission, available here.
    Applications must be received before the published deadlines, along with a $75 nonrefundable processing fee. The fee should be paid by check, credit card or money order in U.S. funds to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Please do not send cash.
  • Transcripts 
    The Office of Admissions requires official transcripts of all college-level course work. To be considered official, transcripts must arrive in sealed envelopes from each institution you attended.
  • Results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Please request Educational Testing Services, who administer the GRE, to send scores to UAF, school code 4866.
  • Resume/Vitae
    Include work and research experience, publications, patents, honors, and professional memberships.
  • Statement of Academic Goals
    Prepare a carefully written Statement of Graduate and Research Interests and Professional Goals, which should be at least two pages long. It should give details of your specific scientific interests, your personal background as it has shaped your interests, and your professional goals. Explain what areas of molecular science you are interested in. Finally, and most importantly, point out research areas of specific UAF professors that appeal to you.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    Send at least three letters of recommendation from those able to vouch for the applicant's academic work, character and ability to undertake graduate study and research.

Applicants should ensure that applications, along with all supporting documentation, transcripts, and test scores are sent by mail or email to the Office of Admissions by January 15th for Fall admission or October 1st for Spring admission.   Later applications may be considered, but teaching and research assistantships are offered on a competitive basis and may not be available to late applicants.  Please check the website of the Graduate School for the most up-to-date requirements. 

International Applicants
International applicants should follow the see the UAF Admissions website for specific guidelines. Due to visa requirements, international students applications are only considered for Fall admission.

Interdisciplinary Applicants
Submit a Graduate Study Plan and a short research proposal. Applicants must also obtain commitment from a UAF faculty member to serve as advisory committee chair. Contact the Graduate School for specific interdisciplinary procedures.
