Kelechukwu (“KC”) Alu joined the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Chukchi Campus in August 2014, as an Assistant Professor of Developmental Mathematics. Before coming to UAF, he was a Mathematics Instructor at West Georgia Technical College. Mr. Alu has taught and tutored math at East Tennessee State University, Walters State Community College, and Northeast State Community College, all in Tennessee. He also taught computer science and math courses as a Lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Nigeria.

Mr. Alu holds a Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences from East Tennessee State University and a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Computer Science from Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria. He is a member of several professional organizations. Alu, originally from Nigeria, is a naturalized US citizen.

In addition to his teaching experience, KC has in the past provided direct support to adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. He helped many developmentally and intellectually challenged adults gain knowledge and skills that increased their independence and improved their quality of life.

Mr. Alu has developed and taught several math courses at the Alaska Technical Center (ATC) in Kotzebue as part of a new partnership between the UAF Chukchi Campus and the Alaska Technical Center. This has resulted in a marked improvement in students’ math scores on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).

KC Alu has been instrumental to several success stories in the Arctic, and has been very active in his service to the university and the community. He has been developing math courses, teaching students at the Alaska Technical Center, serving as a math resource person for Maniilaq Association’s Water Operator Certification course, offering free math tutoring, planning and holding community math nights, developing math radio programs, and engaging in other activities aimed at increasing math interest, enrollment, and success rates among college students, high school students, and the general public.

Mr. Alu is very passionate about teaching mathematics and instilling a love for the subject in his students. He is excited about serving students and communities in rural Alaska, and is committed to helping increase the math capacity of the Northwest Arctic region.
