Winter storm warning information

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the middle Tanana Valley with heavy snow and areas of strong winds expected to continue through 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31.

Snow is expected to begin this afternoon and become heavy in the evening with 8 to 15 inches of accumulation. Visibility may be less than a half mile at times and travel may be difficult. As with any heavy snowfall, trees may fall on power lines resulting in power outages.

UAF Facilities Services crews will be working to clear the snow on the Fairbanks campus and expect most roads and parking lots to be cleared for the Sparktacular event scheduled for 8 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Although most offices at UAF are closed for the winter break, there are some employees who are scheduled to work. These employees should coordinate with their supervisors for alternate scheduling if they do not feel safe to travel.

Additional updates on event cancellations will be posted on UAF on Alert as needed.
