Chancellor to host forum on the budget

UAF Chancellor Dana Thomas will host a public forum on the budget from 1:10-2:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the Murie Building auditorium.

Staff, faculty and students are encouraged to come with concerns and ideas. This is an opportunity for university leaders to hear from you.

The forum will be webcast for those who are unable to attend in person. Comments can also be submitted in advance here.

Capitol Report for March 7

This week, the House Finance Committee will complete work on the state’s FY18 operating budget with the goal of getting the House bill (HB 57/HB 59) passed to the Senate by early next week. Read more

Regents address potential impact of budget cuts

The University of Alaska Board of Regents delved into a wide array of the university’s strengths and challenges at its March 2-3 meeting, focusing directly on the FY18 budget currently making its way through the House Finance Committee. During its two-day meeting in Anchorage, the board agreed that the university must continue advocating for the $341 million unrestricted general fund budget request it passed in November. Additionally, the board said further reductions to the university’s current state UGF budget of $325 million will require serious cuts, including the loss of programs as well as staff and term and non-tenure track faculty positions. Ghana government expert visits UAF

A scholar of Ghana's governance will give a free public lecture at 5 p.m. March 7 in Room 303 of the Gruening Building.

Jennifer Boylan will discuss “The Democratic Benefits of Centralized Institutions in Ghana," the topic of her 2016 Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Florida. Boylan is the UF Center for African Studies' programs and communications officer. Read more

Workshop will teach intuitive statistics

A workshop April 8-9 will explore essential statistical methods using a powerful but user-friendly computer program.

Bahareh Barati, a postdoctoral fellow with the Institute of Arctic Biology, will lead the workshop, which is sponsored by the UAF Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity. The workshop will be in 301 Rasmuson Library on the Fairbanks campus. Read more

Long-term site status will boost Gulf of Alaska studies
A 20-year effort by UAF researchers to monitor the northern Gulf of Alaska's animals and environmental markers will soon expand. The National Science Foundation has designated the northern gulf as a Long-Term Ecological Research site and will provide grant money for future science in the area. Read more

As another major rainstorm hit California in February, downtown San Francisco surpassed its normal rain total for an entire year. Reservoirs in the high country were spilling over. So ended a five-year drought in the state that some people attributed to human-caused climate change.

Landmark antenna on UAF's West Ridge to be replaced

A landmark antenna at UAF will be removed and replaced by a similar one during spring break week in March 2017. After more than 25 years of service, the pale blue antenna dish on the roof of the Elvey Building will retire. In the 10-meter dish's place will go a 9-meter antenna that will be colored Nanook blue. Facilities Services is asking members of the campus community and public to avoid the center area of Koyukuk Drive south of O'Neill and Elvey today, March 8. Read more

Walsh Hall parking lot closed for building repairs

Damages to Walsh Hall and the Whitaker Building caused by steam and water leaks will be repaired during the next six months. A contractor will soon begin the work, so the Walsh Hall parking lot will be closed starting March 8 for snow removal. The contractor is scheduled to mobilize equipment and materials on March 14. Skiathon will tour campus trails for 20K

The Skiathon classic cross-country ski race and tour will be held on the University of Alaska Fairbanks trails starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 19. The course winds for 20 kilometers — about 12.4 miles — through the forest, fields and lakes of the north campus. Read more
