Regents' Great Hall sprinkler replacement planned

UAF Design and Construction will replace the sprinkler system and complete other upgrades in the Regents' Great Hall from June through mid-November.

The mandatory project, necessary to meet building codes, will also include abatement of asbestos in the ceilings and the demolition of adjacent wall finishes. A new suspended ceiling will allow access for equipment maintenance. The finishes and lighting in the space will be upgraded and refurbished to create an attractive space for our campus community and visitors.

Depending on funding and the schedule, there are plans to add an elevator to give people with disabilities access to the Rasmuson Library and renovate the restrooms in the corridor southeast of the Great Hall.

The restrooms in the corridor leading from the Great Hall to library are also scheduled to be renovated this summer.

Event planning on campus

Event coordinators should reserve their venues ahead of time and fill out a UAF events form as campus space is at a premium with upcoming construction projects and several large events occurring, such as the Week of the Arctic May 8-11.

Wood Center copper roof to be replaced in summer 2017

Contractors will replace Wood Center's copper roof and fix other major problems in the building's original wing in summer 2017.

The project is scheduled to begin May 19 and end Sept. 30. The facility will close for one two-week period but otherwise will be open.

The original Wood Center opened in 1972. Its copper roof has had multiple leaks and failed emergency repairs, making replacement a high-priority project.
Leaky skylights on the original building's west side also will be removed. On the east side, a better membrane will be installed under the roof deck, which will remain usable as a walking surface. In addition, the project will improve the building's overall thermal performance.

Please call Wood Center scheduling before planning any events there, and watch for updates on the Cornerstone news site.
