UAF workshops cover energy and emergencies

Upcoming Cooperative Extension Service workshops at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Schaible Auditorium will focus on using solar energy for growing food and on emergency preparedness.

Extension energy specialist Art Nash will join Tim Prather of the University of Tennessee Extension at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 20 for a workshop on using solar energy for food production, followed by a presentation at 6:30 p.m. on energy sources to use in case of an emergency. The first workshop will cover photovoltaic electric panels, evacuated tubes, parabolic dishes and passive solar materials. The emergency energy workshop will highlight compact, efficient cooking and heating options powered by propane, white gas and wood.

At 4 p.m. Feb. 22, Nash will lead a workshop on emergency preparedness recommendations to help homeowners prepare for natural disasters or wildfires. He will also talk about an emergency disaster homeowner handbook Extension and the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program are developing. Faculty development director conducts trainings in Taiwan

Joy Morrison, director of the Office of Faculty Development under the UAF provost, spent two weeks as a Fulbright specialist training faculty in Taiwan in late November and early December.

Morrison was invited by the Center for Teaching and Learning Development at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, where she offered workshops, did classroom observations and trained staff at the center. She also gave talks and workshops at Tzu Chi University in Hualien and at the National Ilan University in Yilan.

She was keynote speaker at the national Taiwan Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education annual conference in Yilan on Dec. 5, speaking on "Flipping the Classroom."
