Farewell, but not goodbye

From Dana Thomas, UAF chancellor

In a few short days, I will step down as UAF’s interim chancellor and try, for a third time, my hand at retirement. The decision to come here for the interim role was a good one. Kay and I genuinely care about this institution and, more importantly, the faculty, staff and students who are so dedicated to it.

As I reflect on the past year, I think about the positive things we’ve accomplished together during a time of great change. Here are just a few of the highlights:

More than 400 Fairbanks community members came together to support UAF and its students at the 2017 Blue and Gold Gala by raising $121,000 for the Centennial Scholarships and Fellowships Initiative. Overall, that initiative has raised approximately $8.5 million for student financial support.

More than 1,300 graduates crossed the stage at our spring commencement exercises in Fairbanks and at our rural campuses.

We had a lot of fun celebrating our centennial May 3, commemorating the date Alaska Territorial Gov. John Strong signed the bill to create what is now known as UAF. Friends and supporters gathered in Centennial Square to recognize a century of education and community.

The Week of the Arctic this May welcomed people from all over the world and showcased UAF as a leader in climate research.

Dan White was selected as UAF’s permanent chancellor this spring. I know you’ll welcome him back to the university in the same way you did for me.

It is important to highlight accomplishments during these uncertain times and I encourage you all to take the time to share your accomplishments, both big and small, regularly.

In times of scarcity, it can be tempting to retreat to our silos, but over the past year, I’ve seen examples of great leadership and collaboration; this is what will see UAF through these uncertain times. I will continue to champion for you and this institution as well.

Kay and I will be snow birding as we did during our previous short-lived retirement and we look forward to seeing and visiting with you all at local grocery stores, restaurants, and hockey games.

To those of you who were able to stop by the Chancellor’s Residence this afternoon, Kay and I thank you. To those who were unable to make it, we hope to see you soon. To all of you, we are grateful for your friendship and support. Always a part of the Nanook Nation.
