Submit publications for 2017 Authors Reception

The 2017 Authors Reception, hosted by Chancellor Dana Thomas, will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, at the Rasmuson Library on Level 6.
|
As in past years, we ask that UAF authors send us a physical copy or URL of their publications by April 1, using the following criteria:
|
- Books and e-books they have authored or co-authored.
- Peer-reviewed articles they have authored or co-authored. (Please provide a permalink where possible.)
We invite authors to join colleagues at this event, which celebrates the many accomplishments of our faculty.

Museum lecture to explore life after Kasatochi Volcano eruption

Chancellor to host forum on the budget
|

UAF Chancellor Dana Thomas will host a public forum on the budget from 1:10-2:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the Murie Building auditorium.

Staff, faculty and students are encouraged to come with concerns and ideas. This is an opportunity for university leaders to hear from you.
|
The forum will be webcast for those who are unable to attend in person. Comments can also be submitted in advance here.

Commencement-related orders to be placed now
Did you apply to graduate, and do you plan to walk this spring at Commencement 2017? If so, it’s time to place your orders for announcements and regalia. Online orders can be placed through April 3. Late orders will have to be done in person at the UAF Bookstore and may incur late fees.

Sessions will prepare graduates in lieu of rehearsal
The Fairbanks campus' 95th graduation ceremony is slated for Saturday, May 6, at the Carlson Center. There will be no rehearsal, so it's important for graduates to come to the ceremony prepared. Read more

Ketchikan to host Alaska Wood Energy Conference
Registration is open for the Alaska Wood Energy Conference, which will meet April 11-12 in Ketchikan. The biennial conference will focus on how wood energy can help Alaska with its energy challenges. Read more

Scientist makes Mars-like rocks in search for life
Sarah Black recently came to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to create Martian rocks, and is now back in Colorado destroying them. No, it’s not out of frustration. The doctoral student at the University of Colorado Boulder is conducting an experiment that will help scientists determine if suspected hot spots for potential life on Mars were truly once hot spots. Diabetes educational training offered in Fairbanks
The Diabetes Self-Management Program Leaders Course on March 16-17 and March 23-24 will train individuals how to teach a six-week diabetes self-management workshop through clinics, senior centers and other community sites. Read more

Completing a personal health assessment, receiving a biometric screening and earning another five wellness points, all by April 30, will save you $600 on your health care contributions in fiscal year 2018. If you can complete those by March 31, you will also be entered to win gift cards.

Theatre UAF presents 'Five Women Wearing the Same Dress'
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Theatre and Film will present "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress," a play by Alan Ball, in the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre from March 24-April 2.

The comedic play portrays five bridesmaids as they together avoid an extravagant wedding reception in Tennessee. Actors use profanity — if were a film, the play would be rated R. Read more

Far-north mallards thrive on the edge
|
|
With dogs' breath fogging the 30-below-zero air at their knees, 71 Iditarod mushers steamed their way down the frozen Chena River in Fairbanks on March 6. Upstream, just a few miles behind them, 500 ducks were surviving in a one-mile stretch of open water. You might think the mallards that did not migrate from the sub-Arctic in fall would be skinny and weak, but a UAF graduate student found the Fairbanks ducks have the highest midwinter body mass of just about any mallards in North America.
