While we are still fresh to this new academic year, I’d like to remind you of some important requirements and share with you some new campus initiatives.
As I noted in my welcome letter, strong relationships are key to everything we do. Our most important role as employees is fostering an environment where students and employees feel safe and supported.
The Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, formerly known as the Dean of Students office, will continue to oversee many aspects of student conduct, and will work closely with departments and student support services throughout the university. The Division of Student Affairs is also working on several new initiatives aimed at helping underrepresented student populations meet their educational goals. Human Resources is also an important part of ensuring we have a safe and supportive community.
The Department of Equity and Compliance, formerly known as the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, will continue to build inclusive systems through new initiatives for prevention and education; provide advice and direction to students and employees; and establish processes to eradicate discrimination and build equity. The department will move into the Eielson Building in the spring, which will improve access for employees and students, and will strengthen relationships among the many units that work on diversity and wellness issues. We are also investing more resources into staff who support ADA, diversity and inclusion and Title IX activities.
All “responsible employees” at UAF must update their Title IX training every year between July 1 and Sept. 30. Responsible employees are required to report sex or gender-based incidents within 24 hours of receiving information about an event to the Title IX coordinator at www.uaf.edu/titleix/. The term refers to all staff and faculty and all Residence Life student employees.
As you may be aware, students also take Title IX and AlcoholEdu training. These trainings and initiatives are all part of a comprehensive approach to growing a culture of respect, diversity and inclusivity. I ask that you play your part in creating a university where everyone can thrive.
