As a follow-up to Chancellor White’s Sept. 18 budget update, I am sharing information about the difference between the different types of reviews of academic (and some nonacademic) programs. We will be engaged in three parallel review efforts.

Statewide reviews
On Sept. 12, the Board of Regents passed a motion that directs the president, working with the chancellors, to form interuniversity teams to conduct expedited program reviews of units and programs systemwide to determine how best to integrate, reduce or discontinue units and programs. Each of these areas will be reviewed at a statewide level by interuniversity teams composed of faculty, administrators, staff, students and community representatives. The statewide academic restructuring website provides details on review teams, process timeline and the questions that will be addressed. The reports will be posted for governance and public input between Oct. 10-17.

UAF program review
Academic program review is designed to meet the standards of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the regional accrediting organization that oversees UAF, as well as to comply with University Regulation 10.06.010.B. As required in regulation, centrality of the program to the university’s mission (PDF), program quality and distinctiveness within the UA system, student demand, employment opportunities for graduates, program productivity, efficiency, student learning outcomes, and total cost are considered. Every academic program at UAF undergoes review at least once during a five-year cycle. Programs that fall under the normal 2019-2020 review cycle are listed here. These will all be reviewed under the regular cycle and process unless they are subject to the UAF expedited program review. (See below.)

UAF expedited program review
At the Sept. 12 board meeting, UAF, UAA and UAS were asked to move forward with our own expedited reviews to achieve cost savings. We are now finalizing the review process and the list of departments and programs that will be reviewed based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to, low enrollment and high cost. Expedited review will focus on department and program enrollments, cost-effectiveness, and centrality to
UAF’s mission. This information will be posted on the UAF provost’s website next week.

In essence, the Statewide reviews are at the discipline or college/school level, UAF regular program review is at the degree level, and UAF expedited program review is at the department level.
