UAF leads project to map hydrocarbon seeps on Alaska seafloor

Map of the seafloor and bubble streams rising from seeps. Multibeam echo sounder data collected from a survey ship show the seafloor topography (gray). Seafloor colors are based on the intensity of the echo return, or backscatter, and show where the seafloor is hard/rough (warm colors) or soft/smooth (cool colors). Most of the seafloor is covered by soft sediment, but around seeps the seafloor is often hard due to chemosynthetic mussel beds and from carbonate rock that precipitates from methane reacting with seawater (bright red areas). Multibeam echo sounders can also see anomalies in the water above the seafloor, such as these gas bubble plumes (green) issuing from seafloor seeps. The red lines are artifacts in the backscatter data that follow the ship’s track.
Researchers from UAF are mapping oil and gas seeps off Alaska’s coast to better understand hydrocarbon resources and seafloor ecosystems. Read more
