Today I appointed Vice Chancellor Keith Champagne to serve as athletics director for UAF. Champagne will take over for Sterling Steward, who stepped down from his position earlier today. Dr. Champagne will continue in his role as vice chancellor for student affairs, a role that is consistent with his new duties leading the Alaska Nanooks athletics program.
This change is more than one of titles. It marks a move to further integrate athletics into the university community and a renewed focus on fundraising, marketing and community engagement.
In addition to Vice Chancellor Champagne’s experience in student affairs, he has a solid background in athletics. His doctoral work focused on intercollegiate athletics leadership and sports management, and he is a graduate of the prestigious Sports Management Institute. Prior to joining the leadership team at UAF, he served as chief diversity officer for intercollegiate athletics at Central Washington University.
I am confident that under his leadership UAF athletics will grow. I look forward to working with Dr. Champagne to establish a solid foundation and vibrant future for UAF athletics.
Sincerely, Dan White, chancellor
