As I wrote in this week’s budget column, the UA Board of Regents will meet next Monday, April 8, to make a decision about possible changes to teacher preparation programs at the University of Alaska. Specifically, President Johnsen is recommending that UA discontinue UAA’s initial licensure programs and transfer those programs to either UAF or UAS. This recommendation comes in the wake of the loss of accreditation of UAA’s initial licensure programs.

I want to make sure it’s clear that UAF’s education programs are not affected by the loss of accreditation at the UAA School of Education. In fact, UAF’s School of Education recently earned accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, or CAEP, thanks to the hard work of the staff and faculty in that program. In addition, professionals within the UAF School of Education are working very hard to both accommodate UAA’s education students who have already decided to transfer to UAF and to ensure a clear path for other UAA education students, should the board vote to adopt President Johnsen’s recommendation. You can find information about the April 8 Board of Regents meeting, including President Johnsen’s recommendation and supporting materials, here. A series of FAQs can be found here.

I would especially like to recognize our School of Education faculty and staff for their efforts to ensure Alaskans will continue to have access to high-quality education programs, regardless of the Board of Regents’ decision. The university’s students and Alaska’s children are counting on it.
