I was saddened to learn that Robert Elsner passed away in March 28. He was almost 99 years old and had been married to his wife, Betty, for 72 years. Bob was a longtime faculty member of the Institute of Marine Science and the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. After many years at UAF, he was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement.

Bob and his colleague Vera Alexander were tireless in their efforts to secure a research vessel to replace the Alpha Helix. After decades of work by Bob, Vera and countless others, UAF commissioned the Sikuliaq in 2012. It was Bob who came up with the name “Sikuliaq” after working with hunters off the coast of Utqiagvik. In recognition of their efforts, Bob's and Vera's initials were welded into the hull of the ship. In 2012, Bob officially launched the Sikuliaq in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Our condolences go out to Betty and family.
