I was saddened to learn that Ronald Senungetuk died Tuesday morning. Ron was born in the village of Wales, Alaska. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and then studied sculpture and metalsmithing in Oslo as a Fulbright scholar in the early 1960s. He joined the art faculty at UAF, and, in 1965, he founded the Native Arts Center. UAF conferred emeritus status on him when he retired as head of the Art Department in 1986, and awarded him an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2015.

Ron was a world-renowned artist who inspired countless people, many of whom have gone on to successful careers of their own as artists and teachers. My condolences to Ron’s family, friends and colleagues.
