Dear UAF faculty and staff,

As summer 2021 continues to bless us with good weather and some normalcy, we at UAF are energized and busy preparing for the start of the fall 2021 semester.

We have heard from our incoming and continuing students who are excited to be on campus and attend in-person classes and events. We are looking forward to providing a vibrant on-campus environment. This fall, UAF will offer nearly twice as many face-to-face courses as last year. There will be 1,144 face-to-face courses offered across UAF, compared to 602 last fall. Facilities Services is busy reconfiguring classes and laboratories, and the Residence Life team is busy prepping the residence halls to welcome the students.

UA Human Resources teams are working on updated guidelines on remote work for employees, which will be shared in early fall when they are finalized. Our regular academic faculty members will be back on contract and in person starting Aug. 8. For faculty, any exception and request for remote work will need to be explicitly discussed, agreed upon, and approved by the supervising dean or director. Staff will also need to request an exception for remote work this fall. Remote work requests should be discussed with supervisors prior to submission for approval. Remote work requests can be found on UAHR’s website.

The last year and half has taught us a lot, and among other things we grew our capacity to offer high quality distance delivery of academic courses. Our rural community campuses already provide many courses by a variety of synchronous distance delivery methods, and some followed by in-person intensives. This fall, UAF eCampus will continue to offer more than 500 fully asynchronous online courses. These courses are designed to serve students with busy schedules and life commitments.

The best way to ensure we can continue to work, teach and conduct research in person is to get vaccinated. The State of Alaska has a website that can show you where you can get one, along with a good list of questions people might have about the vaccine. The university pulled together in extraordinary ways last year to keep our institution running, and I am confident we will continue to work together to keep everyone safe and healthy.
