Friday Focus: Advancing university identity

Everything we see matters. It could be a name on a building, a banner on a website or the side of a building, or a story in the local newspaper. I spend a lot of time thinking about how UAF is perceived, how we talk about ourselves and how to tell our stories, while advancing this university and ensuring that UAF is a place of belonging for all students, faculty and staff.

Workshops focus on firewood, biochar and private woodlands

Learn all about firewood in three, free interactive workshops July 25 and 26 sponsored by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service. The workshops will cover topics such as managing private woodlands, stacking and storing wood, and creating biochar to boost vegetable production.


ACUASI in Canada

UAF crew, unmanned aircraft help protect endangered right whales

The Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration is back in Canada to help prevent endangered North Atlantic right whales from colliding with vessels in the busy Gulf of St. Lawrence. This marks the third year of ACUASI as an official part of the Canadian government's North Atlantic right whale monitoring program and its fifth year in the whale effort overall.

Gail Priday has joined Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning as the associate director. She brings to the position an excellent background in program development, public outreach as well as classroom teaching experience.

Method devised by UAF scientist can improve explosion detection

Computers can be trained to better detect distant nuclear detonations, chemical blasts and volcano eruptions by learning from artificial explosion signals, according to a new method devised by UAF Geophysical Institute postdoctoral researcher Alex Witsil.
