A More Caring University: Higher Education Leadership in the Age of Low Morale and
Burnout
In his presentation, Dr. McClure argues why working culture and conditions can no longer be an
afterthought in higher education. Drawing on research and insights from his public
writing, McClure explains the causes and consequences of burnout, demoralization,
and disengagement in higher education. And using critical hope as a solutions framework,
he shares principles and promising practices to build a more caring university.
Dr. McClure is an expert on college leadership, management, and finance, especially
at broad-access institutions. He is the co-editor of Regional Public Universities:
Addressing Misconceptions and Analyzing Contributions and Unlocking Opportunity through
Broadly Accessible Institutions. Dr. McClure’s public scholarship covers a range of
topics, and throughout the pandemic, he has written viral articles on morale, burnout,
disengagement, staffing, and leadership in higher education. Learn more about Dr. McClure and read his work at: https://linktr.eeinrmcclure
