Alaska Climate Outlook Briefing

Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy at the International Arctic Research Center is hosting Rick Thoman's monthly Alaska Climate Outlook Briefing webinar on Friday, Feb. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. We will review recent and current climate conditions around Alaska, discuss forecast tools, and finish up the Climate Prediction Center’s forecast for March 2023 and the early spring season. The North Slope of Alaska is famous for its polar dinosaurs. Less known is the fact that the same rocks that preserve the dinosaurs also contain abundant bird fossils. Lauren Keller, a graduate student at the Department of Geosciences, will talk in the Elvey Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 17 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. about the ecology and evolution of the earliest known arctic birds and how they increase our knowledge of Late Cretaceous birds in North America. Food preservation, gardening classes offered in Petersburg

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension will offer in-person food preservation classes and gardening classes in Petersburg this February. Visit the Petersburg Extension workshops page to sign up for the other workshops. Classes are free for tribal members. For more information, contact Lewis via email, or at 907-523-3280, ext. 1. Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made five business days in advance to Lewis.

Anchorage student wins national poster contest

An Anchorage elementary school student won first place in the 2022 National Radon Poster Contest. Luciana Liu attends O’Malley Elementary School. The national contest, open to students between 9 and 14, awards a $1,000 prize. Liu is the first Alaskan to win the contest, which attracts thousands of entrants every year, according to Jennifer Athey, a geologist with the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. In honor of Liu’s award, the Alaska Radon Program will take requests for free radon test kits (one per residence) through the end of February, while supplies lastMore info about radon and radon testing is available online.
