Friday Focus: The athletics effect

I had my son between my freshman and sophomore years of college here at UAF. As a full-time student with a baby-turned-toddler, I spent my free time doing free things. That included many hockey and volleyball games. One of my most treasured memories is of my son, when he was two years old, sitting in my lap in the student section at the Carlson Center and being a little celebrity as he captured the attention of other students sitting around us. At one game, he was paying particular attention to the crowd and watching the students yell, cheer, stomp, and clap, and he was getting really into it. Suddenly, during a quiet moment in our section, he decided it was his turn to shine and belted out TwinkleTwink Little Star as loud as he could, causing a wave of laughter throughout the section. SRDD registration closes today!

The registration period for this year's Staff Recognition and Development Day closes Friday, April 5. We hope to see everyone who is able attend the longevity ceremony, keynote speaker, and lunch sessions in the Wood Center ballroom. Science Potpourri returns April 13

The annual Science Potpourri returns on April 13, 2024. Designed to spark children's curiosity about the sciences, this free all-ages event will take place from noon-3 p.m. in the Reichardt Building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Troth Yeddha' Campus. Enhancing connection and flexibility

While many courses at UAF are offered and listed as asynchronous, nothing prevents the inclusion of optional synchronous sessions. This teaching tip offers advice on a variety of synchronous activities that you might consider adding to your course as supplemental ways for students to connect with each other, you, and the content. UAF Community Yoga Club weekly practice

Faculty regalia orders due today

Don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate your students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks commencement ceremony by marching in the faculty procession. All faculty are required to wear regalia at commencement. If you don’t own regalia, you can rent it by filling out the regalia rental form. If you want to buy regalia, or have questions, email SM8514@bncollege.com.

Forums scheduled for CTC dean candidates

Two candidates for dean of the UAF Community and Technical College will give a public lecture on Tuesday, April 9 as part of the selection process. Individual, one-hour presentations by Carl Bishop and Kevin Kovalycsik will focus on their vision for CTC. There will be an opportunity for candidates to answer questions from the audience. NTS's computer bulk buy discounts open through April 12

UAF departments can take advantage of computer bulk buy discounts through Nanook Technology Services through April 12. The discounts apply to select Dell desktops, laptops, all-in-ones, monitors and accessories. Read more on the bulk buy program.

Rockets to gather sun data in rare daytime Poker Flat launches

Two rockets are set to launch within minutes of each other from Poker Flat Research Range this month in NASA's first campaign to study solar flares with instruments launched on sounding rockets. Read more on the data being gathered in the launches.
