Friday Focus: Hearing from you

How long does it take UAF employees to eat 500 ice creams? Well, according to data collected at Convocation on Sept. 12, the answer is a lot faster than we predicted! By the time I made it out of the auditorium, all of the ice cream and most of the sweatshirts were gone. Though sad for my anticipated ice cream delight, this was a good problem to have. This meant that so many of you (500 ice cream's worth) showed up to Convocation. Thank you. And thank you to everyone at the rural campuses and remote employees who attended online! You are a part of Convocation and part of this great institution. Last spring, the Employee Experience Task Force reviewed the data from the fall 2023 employee survey and, among other recommendations, recommended UAF increase opportunities for two-way communication with employees. Flu vaccination clinics

The UAF Student Health and Counseling Center is offering free flu vaccinations to all enrolled UAF students, as well as staff/faculty and their financially interdependent partners. Get more info on when and where the clinics will be on campus.


UA Safe Title IX training due by Oct. 31

The required annual UA Safe Title IX Training is now available through Canvas. Students, employees and volunteers must complete the training by Oct. 31, 2024. Learn more and complete the training.


Limited submission opportunity

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has announced a limited submission opportunity for the Department of Energy funding opportunity DE-FOA-0003444. White papers are due Oct. 4, 2024, 5 p.m. AKST, and should be submitted through the UAF Limited Submission and White Paper Application form. Learn science behind Alaska's spooky plants, bats, insects

Carnivorous plants, bats, spiders and zombie insects are the subjects of a series of free spooky science webinars hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service in October. Read more and register for the webinars.

Kindness to Animals Day: Pet supplies, pet food drive

In honor of Kindness to Animals Day, the Office of Rights, Compliance and Accountability Prevention and Outreach Department as well as Residence Life, the Office of Disability Services, and the Office of Sustainability are hosting a donation drive for our pets within the Nanook community. We ask that you kindly consider donating your gently used pet supplies and unopened pet food. Learn more about the event.


Benefactor fund grants available to student groups

The UAF Alumni Association offers grants of up to $1,000 for student and campus groups to fund projects that address specific needs and enhance opportunities for current students. Applications are due by Oct. 28, 2024. Read more on the grant funds and how to apply for them.

Red aurora rare enough to be special

Charles Deehr will never forget his first red aurora. On Feb. 11, 1958, Deehr was a student at Reed College in Portland, Ore. He asked a Fulbright student from Norway named Tone to the Portland Symphony that night. Learn more about these rare aurora.
