Dear UAF faculty and staff,

It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Joe Usibelli, whose contributions to Alaska and to the University of Alaska Fairbanks have been transformational.

Joe Usibelli earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering at UAF in 1959. In 1964, at the age of 25, Joe Usibelli took the helm as the president of the Usibelli Coal Mine after his father died in a mine accident. He went on to build a successful business that continues to positively impact Interior Alaskans. In 1996 Joe Usibelli was awarded an honorary doctorate by UAF.

As a leader in Alaska’s mining industry, Joe modernized Usibelli Coal Mine’s equipment, paved the way for new mining methods, and established a successful land reclamation program. Joe and his wife, Peggy Shumaker gave back to the Fairbanks community in a variety of ways, a big part of which was through distinguished and notable philanthropic support of UAF.

In 2017 the Usibelli family was named philanthropists of the century by UAF. At an exceptional level, the Usibelli family and coal mine, led by Joe Usibelli’s personal philanthropy, had dedicated their time and resources to the university. The impact of Joe’s steadfast commitment to education can be seen across the UAF Troth Yeddha’ campus, the University of Alaska Museum of the North, the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Faculty Awards and four endowed scholarships that provide support to 15 UAF students annually. Joe Usibelli also served in leadership and advisory roles for UAF and the University of Alaska. Joe’s enduring support of Alaska and UAF will long be remembered.
