Feb. 1, 2023

Dear UAF community,

As we celebrate Black History Month, I would like to take a moment to recognize the many contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans to our country and the world.

At University of Alaska Fairbanks, we are committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and caring, and to providing an environment where all students, faculty, and staff can thrive. We recognize that Black Americans have played a significant role in shaping our nation and its history, and it is our responsibility to ensure their contributions are acknowledged and celebrated.

In recognition of Black History Month, the UAF Nanook Diversity and Action Center is offering several events that celebrate Black arts and culture, including a monthlong social media campaign celebrating Black history on its Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Ericka Hart will present via Zoom as Black History Month keynote speaker on Friday, Feb. 10, from 3-5 p.m. Ericka, a nationally acclaimed speaker and sexuality educator based in New York, advocates for disability and civil rights, LGBTQ2IA+ inclusivity, sex education and assault prevention.

Tracie Gatewood will speak as part of the Northwest Campus’ Shine a Light Speaker Series via Zoom on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from noon-1 p.m. Tracie is a business consultant in Fairbanks who works to increase awareness of systemic racism. Look for the link to register in Cornerstone soon.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of the many opportunities this month offers to learn about Black history and culture. Let’s celebrate the diversity of our community and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

Thank you for choosing UAF.

Dan White, chancellor
