Dear UAF community,
Recently, it was brought to the public's attention that the Alaska State Commission
for Human Rights deleted language listing most equal protection categories for LGBTQ+
Alaskans from their website, and has stopped investigating any of these complaints
outside of employment cases. Understandably, many at UAF have been concerned about
the impact this change will have on our community, as none of our campuses reside
in locations where discriminating against LGBTQ+ individuals in housing and public
accommodations is prohibited. We want to reassure you that discrimination based on
sex, sexual orientation or gender identity has no place at UAF.
The University of Alaska’s Notice of Nondiscrimination (found in BOR Policy and Regulation 01.02) prohibits discrimination on the basis
of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity; in addition to race, religion, color,
national origin, citizenship, age, physical or mental disability, status as a protected
veteran, marital status, changes in marital status, pregnancy, childbirth or related
medical conditions, parenthood, political affiliation or belief, genetic information,
or other legally protected status. Everyone, regardless of their identity, has the
right to a discrimination-free learning, working, and living environment at UAF.
The Department of Equity and Compliance investigates reports of harassment and/or discrimination of any kind on behalf of students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. We work closely
with our partners in the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and Human
Resources to ensure accountability when concerns are reported.
Each person arrives at UAF with their own unique perspectives and lived experiences.
This diversity enriches the community and makes us all better. At UAF, we embrace
and are committed to growing a culture of respect, diversity, inclusion, caring, accessibility
and accountability. This means ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected enough
to grow and thrive here. I encourage you to get involved in the amazing offerings across campus as you are seeking to connect with our rich
community and define your college experience.
At UAF, we are all responsible for creating a culture of care and I thank each and
every one of you for helping make this a place of belonging and respect for all.
Sincerely,
Kaydee Van Flein Interim executive director, Deptartment of Equity and Compliance Director, Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities
