Dear UAF students, faculty and staff,
I was saddened to learn that Vera Alexander died last week.
Vera was professor and dean emeritus of what is now the UAF College of Fisheries and
Ocean Sciences.
We will remember Vera as a trailblazer. She was the first woman to earn a doctorate
at the University of Alaska, now UAF. After 15 years as a researcher and professor,
she became director of UAF’s Institute of Marine Science. In 1987, she became the
founding dean of what was then the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. She served
the university in that role for nearly 20 years.
When Vera earned her doctorate in marine science in 1965, women weren’t allowed on
research ships. Thanks to her foresight and decades of determined work, we now have
the R/V Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced research vessels in the world.
We are grateful for Vera’s many remarkable contributions to the university, the state
and the scientific community.
My condolences go to Vera's family, friends and colleagues, and to the students, staff
and faculty who knew her.
If you or someone you know is struggling with this loss, please don’t struggle alone.
Free help is available.
