Aug. 24, 2023
Dear faculty,
Monday, Aug. 28, is the first day of class for this semester. As you start your classes,
please be sure to communicate with your students about your expectations regarding
the use of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, in your classes.
The UAF Faculty Senate will be working this semester to come up with formal guidance
on syllabus language related to artificial intelligence. In the meantime, here are
some examples of syllabus language compiled from a variety of sources. These examples span a wide range of perspectives
and you should use your judgment about what strategy works for your specific classes
as you include language in your syllabi and communicate with your students.
The use of artificial intelligence is growing rapidly and it is likely to continue.
In setting your expectations, please remember that it is extremely hard to determine
with certainty whether content is generated by AI or not. There are also creative
ways of using AI as a pedagogic tool in your classrooms. To learn more about AI tools
and how to use them creatively, you can also register for an AI workshop.
