Dear UAF students, faculty and staff,

I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Brian Hemphill, professor in the Department of Anthropology at UAF’s College of Liberal Arts.

Hemphill joined the UAF faculty in 2013. He worked alongside fellow researchers and colleagues to better understand human evolution in South Asia, Central Asia, the Great Basin and Northwest Coast. In addition to his field and museum research, Hemphill was a valued teacher and mentor to his students. He also served as a senator in the UAF Faculty Senate, chaired and participated in curriculum councils and committees, and was an associate editor for the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

If you or someone you know is struggling with this loss, please don’t struggle alone. Free help is available.

For students, the Student Health and Counseling Center can provide support or counseling. Call 907-474-7043 to speak with someone, or, for more information, visit the student counseling services webpage. Employees are eligible for free counseling through the Employee Assistance Program. Please call 1-888-969-0155, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sincerely

Dan White, chancellor
