Daniel M. White, UAF chancellor
Welcome to the start of a new academic year! If you are new to UAF, I extend an especially warm welcome to Nanook nation. I hope that settling into a new routine includes making new friends while strengthening relationships you already have, including with friends and family back home.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. Be sure to take care of yourself and each other. Healthy, respectful relationships are key to your personal and academic success. Title IX and AlcoholEdu trainings are a priority for all of us at UAF. For us it is more than checking the box — it is the foundation of UAF as a safe and inclusive place to live and learn.

This fall we will begin a new strategic planning effort. I look forward to student participation in this effort as we:

  • Modernize the student experience
  • Cement global leadership in Alaska Native and Indigenous programs
  • Achieve Tier 1 research status and share new knowledge
  • Transform UAF’s intellectual property development and commercialization enterprise
  • Embrace and grow a culture of respect, diversity, inclusivity, safety and caring
  • Revitalize key academic programs, from occupational endorsements to Ph.D.s

You’ll be getting an invitation in the next few weeks for Convocation 2018, when I’ll talk more about these strategic efforts, as well as our many recent successes. This year’s event is Tuesday, Sept. 18. I hope you’ll join me.

A university is, first and foremost, a place of discovery. There are many opportunities at UAF to engage in research, outdoor adventures, athletics and leadership. I look forward to meeting many of you this coming year, and to seeing what new discoveries you make.
