I was saddened to hear of the passing of Howard Luke, honored and respected Alaska Native elder, on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. He would have celebrated his 96th birthday in October.

Howard was a leader dedicated to educating youth in traditional Native skills. He established the Gallee'ya Spirit Camp, a place where he worked with people from all walks of life to teach them about Alaska Native culture, traditions, histories, and values.

Among his many honors, Howard was recognized with an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1996. He touched the lives of many in the UAF community with his generous nature and passion for passing on traditional knowledge. He will be missed.

A memorial service has been organized to pay tribute to Luke’s life and work at
1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Chief David Salmon Tribal Hall, and a commemorative potlatch will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the hall.
