Yesterday many of you received an email from the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, or ACPE, about the uncertain status of funding for the Alaska Performance Scholarship, the Alaska Education Grant and the WWAMI medical education program. We are hopeful that this situation will be resolved with legislation over the next several weeks and that funding will be restored; however, ACPE is not able to make awards under any of these programs at this time. We understand this has created a stressful situation as you start preparing for the fall 2019 semester.
The $350 million Higher Education Investment Fund, which funds these three programs, was “swept” into the Constitutional Budget Reserve as a casualty of the Legislature and the governor not coming to agreement on the state’s FY20 operating budget. However, both have indicated that they want these programs to be available for this coming year, and the university will diligently and deliberately advocate to reinstate the necessary funds.
You can sign up for announcements on funding with Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education. We encourage you to give the Legislature more time to resolve this issue.
If funded, ACPE will award the scholarships in early August. UAF will receive information on awards in mid-August and will post the funds directly to student accounts around the first day of classes. For the most accurate award, please register your full schedule on or by Aug. 1. The deadline to complete the FAFSA to apply for APS and AEG was June 30, 2019. If you missed this deadline, you should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to be considered for late awards.

The UAF Financial Aid Office is available to answer any questions you may have regarding other funding sources. You will still receive the aid listed in your financial aid offer letter, which you can view at UAOnline. Financial aid is scheduled to be disbursed to student accounts on Aug. 16. You can monitor your bill or the status of your refund through UAOnline. Payment plans are also available through the Office of the Bursar.
We understand the gravity of the situation. We will do everything we can to be supportive and helpful as we all get ready for the new academic year.
Thank you for your patience.
