UAF logo and background
Dear UAF students,

Many of you have shared your concerns about UAF in light of Gov. Dunleavy’s veto and how that impacts your future as a UAF student. On Monday, the Board of Regents discussed declaring financial exigency for the UA system but decided to wait until July 30 to make a decision. I’m sure you are asking yourself: What does this mean for me?

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is open and operational, and we are excited for you to join us. Courses will continue to be offered this fall as scheduled. Some classes may drop off the schedule if not enough students register, but that happens every fall and is normal.

On July 22 and 30, President Johnsen will outline his plan for the future of the University of Alaska system. While UAF will certainly look different in the months and years to come, our students will be at the center of all our decisions. Any long-term plans to change our academic program offerings or extracurricular activities will be done so with our students’ best interests at heart.

UAF offers a range of high-quality undergraduate degrees, as well as master's and doctorates. We are also recognized worldwide for our Arctic science. I am deeply committed to facilitating your development, learning and academic success. As the flagship university in Alaska, we take pride in the quality of our offerings — academic and social — throughout our campus community.

Your financial aid offer letter, including federal aid and UAF scholarships, will be honored. You can find them at UAOnline. The amount of your Federal Pell Grant, SEOG, TEACH grant and Federal Direct Loans will not change. The Alaska Performance Scholarship and Alaska Education Grant are state programs that have not been funded for the 2019-2020 academic year, but the Alaska State Legislature may decide to assign funding to these programs during a special session this month.

We will continue to advocate on your behalf. If you would like to take action, contact your legislators at listening sessions around the state this week. As information becomes available, we will post it, email it or otherwise communicate with you.

We eagerly await your arrival on campus in a few weeks!
