Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year. Thank you for choosing UAF for the first time, or again. Since becoming chancellor in July of 2017, I have had the privilege each year of welcoming returning students and new students. It is always refreshing to see everyone make their way to campus, move into student housing, attend student orientation, attend their first class or reunite with friends.

Although your studies are paramount, I hope you will take the time to participate in student life here at UAF. As a new/transfer or returning student, full-time or part-time, there is always something going on or a student organization that would love to have you involved. The Center for Student Engagement or Nanook Athletics are good places to start. Both offer something almost every weekend. You may also check out the abundance of academic and research activities. And, if you are ever at a loss of where to start, talk to your advisor, professors, or ask a staff member. We are all here to help and make your journey with UAF inspiring.

UAF continues to be a place where students have the opportunity to follow their dreams and grow in an environment that cultivates respect, diversity, inclusivity and caring. Safety and respect are key to creating an inclusive and caring community, which is why all students take the “UA Safe” training. If you need help, please reach out to someone. The Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities has an excellent list of resources that cover a range of concerns including academics, finances and emotional support. No matter the circumstance, we are here to help and ensure your success.

I hope you are looking forward to this new semester with as much excitement and hope as I am. There are countless new and exciting opportunities ahead. I will be at all the athletics events so feel free to stop by sometime and say hello. Go Nooks!
