Nanook Nation,

As we wrap up this first week back we find ourselves in an extraordinary time. Decisions being made by the university are affecting our lives in profound ways. Please know that I am doing everything in my power as your student body President to ensure that students are being given every possible opportunity and chance to succeed while also ensuring that we are following the guidance of medical experts in the Alaska State Department of Health and Social Services and the Center for Disease Control.

Here are some updates:
  • Dining and housing refunds are in progress for qualified students. For information regarding qualifications please visit the Residence Life webpage.
  • Student Health and Counseling is offering telehealth and telecounseling for students. Visit their website or information on how to access medical and mental health services.
  • Other university departments that operate through student fees are assessing the services that they are offering to see if they can be offered via alternative methods.
  • UAF has temporarily adjusted academic policies to ensure that students have every opportunity to exceed in the classroom such as extending withdrawals dates and implementing a credit/no-credit system that students can opt into. Your academic advisor will be able to assist you in making these changes.
  • OIT has expanded internet connectivity via hotspots throughout the campus for those within the vicinity and have negotiated deals with both ACS and GCI to assist students suffering from poor internet quality or data amounts.
  • University employees have been urged to work from home. Many staff and faculty have forwarded their office lines to their home and email remains an effective way to reach faculty and staff.
  • The university is actively discussing possibilities for a virtual commencement ceremony, and many departments are moving planned events online.
  • ASUAF has redistributed our budget to assist students in need via the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and the UAF food pantry.
To fellow students, thank you all for your continued patience and adaptability. There will be stressful moments as we adjust to this new situation and I’m glad to represent your interest during this time as we navigate together. Further thanks goes out to the faculty, staff, and administration for doing their best to adopt student-friendly academic and safety measures that help to mitigate the hardships that students will be facing. Please feel free to contact us at asuaf.office@alaska.edu or baoto@alaska.edu with any concerns or questions that you may have and we will do our best to address them!

With Nanook pride,
