Dear Nanook Nation,

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

We’re planning a mix of both in-person and virtual events in Fairbanks this year for the graduating Class of 2021. The in-person celebration includes a drive-in movie-style ceremony and car parade on Saturday, May 1.

Graduates will go directly to the Patty Center and Student Recreation Center parking lots Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. The area will be blocked to through traffic, and graduates will have a pass to get in.

A festival stage and large LED projection screen will be set up for the ceremony, and the event will be livestreamed.

The ceremony will include the student commencement speaker and others, as well as a slideshow announcing the graduates’ names. Once the ceremony is complete, students can follow a 2-mile parade route on campus for a final chance to celebrate.

Family and friends can watch the livestream, or they can park in another area of campus and cheer on the graduate recessional parade around campus.

Graduates who plan to participate in the in-person option must RSVP for this event as space will be limited. Information on how to RSVP will be provided after the March 15 deadline for graduation application.

The virtual ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon and will contain more traditional elements you usually see at commencement. It will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube. Graduates and their families will be able to watch the ceremony online and participate in the event via chat. Only graduates who RSVP and create a slide in MarchingOrder will be included in the virtual ceremony, so you won’t want to miss this step.

We’re still working on the details, so watch your emails as we get closer to the big day!

Be sure to check the commencement website for regular updates and more details, or email uaf-commencement-team@alaska.edu.
