UAF engineering building to be named for Joseph E. Usibelli

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will name its engineering building for UAF alumnus, philanthropist and miner Joseph E. Usibelli during a naming ceremony Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, at 4 p.m. in Cornerstone Plaza outside the building.

A team of scientists will soon head to the Aleutian Islands aboard the research vessel Sikuliaq on a voyage to reconstruct the region's ancient history of powerful storms. Little is known about the Bering Sea’s long-ago record of extreme weather and the factors that drove it.

Method devised by UAF scientist can improve explosion detection

Computers can be trained to better detect distant nuclear detonations, chemical blasts and volcano eruptions by learning from artificial explosion signals, according to a new method devised by UAF Geophysical Institute postdoctoral researcher Alex Witsil.

The UAF Recycling team normally collects paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Due to a temporary closure of the borough's Central Recycling Facility, the team will begin picking up these materials up again when the CRF has re-opened.

UAF crew, unmanned aircraft help protect endangered right whales

The Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration is back in Canada to help prevent endangered North Atlantic right whales from colliding with vessels in the busy Gulf of St. Lawrence. This marks the third year of ACUASI as an official part of the Canadian government's North Atlantic right whale monitoring program and its fifth year in the whale effort overall.

A Bureau of Land Management archaeologist created a guide to identify old Hills Bros. cans found at old cabin sites across Interior Alaska.
