Jessica GlassAFSC Seminar: Long Live the Kingfish

The Alaska Fisheries Science Center will host a virtual seminar on Tuesday, April 11 from 9-10 a.m. featuring Jessica Glass, an assistant professor at UAF’s College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Glass will present “Long Live the Kingfish: Integrating Genomic Patterns and Ecological Processes to Understand Evolution in the Oceans.” Glass will discuss how the field of genomics has revolutionized evolutionary biology and our ability to detect linkages between genes, behavior and the environment. Quality Lighting … with Minimal Environmental Impacts and Benefit to Health and Wellness

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power is virtually hosting one of the world’s foremost lighting design and efficiency experts, Nancy Clanton, who will give a virtual seminar on Thursday, April 6 from 1-2 p.m. The seminar will address opportunities for outdoor lighting retrofits, including cutting-edge research to reduce the biological impacts of light at night on humans and animals. Erica HartEricka Hart: Guest Speaker

Join the Nanook Diversity and Action Center in celebrating black history month with guest speaker, activist, advocate, and sex educator Ericka Hart provide a presentation on "White Supremacy and the Anti Black Origins of Sexual Violence in the US." This rescheduled event will be taking place via Zoom on April 12 from 1-3 p.m. Please register for the event here. If you are interested in watching the event with catering in Arctic Java, we will be hosting a live watch party. Catering for the event will include pizza, cookies, brownies, and rice krispy treats. 2023 Staff Make Students Count Award nominations due April 28

The deadline to submit nominations for the 2023 Staff Make Students Count Award is April 28, 2023. Registration open for non-credit community courses

UAF Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning offers a variety of non-credit courses accessible to members of the community without the requirements of typical college courses. The spring and summer lineup includes the following topics and more: bookmaking, bicycle maintenance, field sketching, mushroom identification, photography, ballroom dance, fly fishing, geocaching, and golf.


Military and veteran appreciation barbecue

Join the Department of Military and Veteran Services on April 14 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Wood Center for a Military and veteran appreciation barbecue! Burgers, hotdogs and barbecue-glazed chicken will be available. UAF students can also get registered for the Fall semester! Meet VA benefits representatives and the team from the Wounded Warrior Project.

Join us for a transformative talk on Thursday, April 6 from 6-8 p.m. in the Wood Center Ballroom! Sonalee Rashatwar (they/he), also known as "The Fat Sex Therapist," is a renowned social worker, sex therapist, lecturer, and grassroots organizer. They do incredible work in the field of sexual, diet, and racial trauma, disability justice, and fat-positive wellness. Free for UAF students and community members.


UAF IT outage coming in May 2023

In May 2023, contractors will install a new battery backup system in the Butrovich Building that serves the Butrovich Data Center. The new unit replaces a 25-year-old system that has aged out and become less reliable. The backup battery provides the data center with continuous power during an outage of the UAF power grid and with the new system in place, the project will substantially increase the center's reliability, resiliency, and up-time to support critical functions, academics, and business continuity.


Cecilia O'LearySeminar: Transboundary groundfish in a warming ocean

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will host a seminar on Friday, April 7 from 3-4 p.m. featuring Cecilia O’Leary, an oceanographer with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. The seminar will be available via Zoom, along with showings in Fairbanks at O’Neill 201 and in Juneau at Lena 101. Please register in advance.


Free ice cream for student employees

In celebration of National Student Employee Appreciation Week, Career Services and the Center for Student Engagement invite all UAF student employees to free ice cream on Thursday, April 13 from noon - 2 p.m. in the Wood Center Mall area. UAF is grateful for your dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work! Please stop by for some free ice cream as a small token of our appreciation!

The College of Rural and Community Development is hosting a monthly series highlighting our research. The series focuses on community-based research, Indigenous knowledge in academia, and best practices for ethical research. UAF staff, faculty and students are encouraged to attend. This month's speaker is Center for Cross-Cultural Studies Associate Professor Claudia Ihl, who will be presenting on the habitat use of muskoxen in Nome on Wednesday, April 12 from noon - 1 p.m. Register for the event here.
