New program launches underserved students into Arctic science

In late August, 12 students from OSU's TRIO Upward Bound program spent five days at the field research station, part of the Institute of Arctic Biology at UAF. Students participated firsthand with Toolik Field Station staff, scientists, artists and others responding to the warming Arctic. Read more on the program.


Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support  to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. The next training session is scheduled for Oct. 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to any student, staff or faculty member at UAF for a $35 fee. Register for the training online.

Tackling test anxiety

Test anxiety is well-known in the college community and can affect students tremendously. We strive to do our best academically, and testing anxiety can hinder effective test performance and studying. Read more in this eCampus blog post.


New financial aid site on academic progress

The UAF Financial Aid Office recently launched the Satisfactory Academic Progress website to provide helpful information regarding SAP financial aid requirement information, including information about the financial aid appeal process. Residence Life is hosting a family-friendly Halloween carnival at the MBS complex on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1-4 p.m. for UAF students, faculty, staff and their families. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Read more on the event.

Circumpolar Food Security (lunch/learn)

AHS lecture and panel series: Alaska Native Sovereignty

Join the Alaska Historical Society and Cook Inlet Historical Society on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in-person at the Anchorage Museum or register to attend virtually for the first of a four-part lecture and panel series about major public policy issues facing Alaska designed to create a more productive environment in which to arrive at sound public policy. Sea stars, urchins and kelp forests

A few weeks ago, Sarah Gravem lowered a "ravenous, terrifying predator" from her boat down to the ocean floor off Sitka. Then she released it. Read more about the study of the relationship between sea urchins that eat kelp and sunflower sea stars that eat the urchins.
